Why this page ?
The purpose of this page is to help people develop the necessary skills to perform air-to-air refueling using the Flanker 2.51 simulator. It is not easy. I initially designed the refueling combo mission with the purpose of posting it as a regular GMA mission. However, it occurred to me that it might just be a little too difficult for the average Flanker jockey to execute. You will see that the briefing is a typical you-get-this-if-you-do-this type of briefing that you encounter in GMA missions. It is not however, very relevant in this particular case.
What do you need to do ?
What you need to do is to fly the mission and record it. Then send it to me for posting and you get huge bragging rights. In addition to those huge bragging rights, you will receive 1000 points for each successful refueling. That would be 3000 points total.
You will receive credit for partial completion of the mission, however, only one entry will be allowed. If you send me an entry, you better be willing to live with it.
Mission details:
You need to perform three separate refuel procedures with three different tankers. The conditions under which you will do this get progressively more and more difficult.
1st tanker: | Visibility good. Calm. Moderate air traffic. No instrument failures. |
2nd tanker: | Visibility severely restricted. Calm. Little air traffic. No instrument failures. |
3rd tanker: | Visibility good. Some turbulence on approach to tanker. Little or no air traffic. Failures (in sequence) : Radar, HUD, MFD, Helmet. |
For initial training regarding this procedure please check out Rich's site. Then apply those skills here. I recommend you practice only the first contact over and over until you are very sure of yourself. Then fly the whole mission a couple of times to get a feel for the other two tankers. Then (and only then) record the mission. I say this because you will get a FPS hit while recording and if you are not in good shape you WILL over control - trust me. While you watch my .trk file (37 minutes - yeah it is boring but learning anything is frequently boring too) if you get to 2 -3 FPS pause it for a few seconds then continue. Use the same trick while recording your flight.
In keeping with the true international following of this simulator all those posting their recordings will have their country of origin posted here.
Download the mission here. Please note that when you submit your recording let me know what Operating System you recorded the track with. Win XP is the one we have the most trouble with. An XP track will not play back correctly on a Win98 system. It will play, however, the outcome will not be the same as when it was recorded. What typically happens is that you will crash or be killed by the enemy when, while the track was recorded everything worked out fine. Also, let me know what country's flag you want to fly under. (No fake countries please).
The sequence on the table below is based on the chronological order of when the mission was completed, not on the refueling times. Although that does provide some more of those huge bragging rights. :-)
Clicking on the pilot's Call Sign will download the track. Call Signs in red denote a Windows XP file.
Call Sign | Refueling Times | Country | Flag |
BrzI | 3:57, 20:05, 36:53 | Canada | |
Locati | 2:29, 18:35, 32:03 | Spain |
Good luck !
